Motivation:
Know the details. Know what is involved in building the thing. This allows others to challenge, find missing components and create a common image which can be communicated with others.

Consider these first :
Focus On User Needs

Illustrative description:
Write down the value chain, which is a chain of needs.

Detailed description:
To create the value chain, start with the user and their needs. Then determine components needed to meet their needs. Then for each of those components, identify needed subcomponents. Then, identify subcomponents of those subcomponents, and so on. For an example, see the included (incomplete) value chain for a cup of tea:
